What is an OFX file?

An OFX file is a bank transaction file in the Open Financial Exchange format. Accounting software reads it to import each transaction's date, amount, payee and a unique ID.

Many banks offer an OFX download for recent months. When a bank only gives you PDFs, Ledgerpour builds the OFX file from the PDF statement instead. The same goes for months the bank no longer offers to download.

How it works

How to convert a PDF bank statement to OFX and import it

Ledgerpour takes you from the PDF your client sent to statement lines waiting to be reconciled, in four steps.

01

Upload the PDF bank statement to Ledgerpour

Drop in the statement downloaded from online banking. Text-based PDFs up to 25 MB.

02

Ledgerpour converts the PDF to CSV

Ledgerpour reads each transaction on the statement into a CSV and Excel file. Then, on the same results screen, choose OFX under Accounting exports. The OFX file keeps each transaction's date, amount and payee, and creating it uses no extra pages.

03

Download and check

Compare the transaction count and closing balance with the statement. You only pay for pages that convert.

04

Import into your accounting software

Upload the OFX file through the bank statement import in Xero, Sage, MYOB or any software that reads OFX.

Use cases

Why bookkeepers and accountants convert bank statements to OFX

The bank feed covers most months. Ledgerpour covers the ones it doesn't.

Catch-up and clean-up clients

A new client arrives with a year of unreconciled PDFs. Their bank's OFX download may not reach back that far.

A feed that dropped out

The bank feed broke for two months. Fill the gap from the statements instead of retyping them.

Banks with no feed

Some banks don't connect to Xero, Sage or MYOB. The PDF statement still converts to OFX.

Moving a client to new software

A client is switching to Xero mid-year. Bring the earlier months in from their PDF statements.

FAQ

PDF to OFX: questions answered

Why won't Xero, Sage or MYOB accept my OFX file?

Check the bank account, file size and statement dates. MYOB requires statement files smaller than 10 MB; opening-balance and lock dates can also prevent transactions from being imported. Check for overlapping bank-feed dates and previously imported statements before trying again.

Can I convert a CSV bank file to OFX?

Yes. Ledgerpour's CSV to OFX converter is free and needs no sign-up.

How do I convert a PDF bank statement to OFX?

Upload your text-based PDF statement to Ledgerpour. Once the CSV and Excel conversion is complete, choose OFX under Accounting exports on the results screen, generate the file and download it. Import it into the correct bank account in your accounting software. Your first 5 pages are free, with no card needed; the export uses no extra pages.

Is there a free PDF to OFX converter?

Yes. Your first 5 pages are free, with no card needed. Ledgerpour converts the PDF bank statement to CSV or Excel, and you can then create the OFX file from that conversion without using extra pages. After that, plans start at $25 a month, and you can top up with credits at $0.20 a page.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Ledgerpour runs in your web browser, so there's nothing to download or install. Upload the PDF bank statement, download the OFX file and import it into your accounting software.

Can Xero import a PDF bank statement?

In the UK, Australia and New Zealand, no. Xero imports files such as OFX and CSV. In the US and Canada, Xero reads PDFs only from banks it supports. For any other bank, convert the PDF to an OFX file first. Then, in Xero, open the bank account, choose Manage account › Import a statement and upload the file.

What's the difference between OFX, QFX and CSV?

OFX is a structured transaction format read by Xero, Sage, MYOB and other accounting software. QFX is used for Quicken Web Connect. CSV is a spreadsheet format that usually needs column mapping during import. Ledgerpour supports these exports where available for your conversion; check the import requirements for your software version.

Can I import an OFX file into QuickBooks?

QuickBooks Online accepts OFX files through Bank transactions › Link account ▾ › Upload from file. QuickBooks Desktop doesn't. It imports bank transactions as QBO (Web Connect) files, which Ledgerpour also exports.

Will importing an OFX file create duplicate transactions?

It can. The unique ID helps your software spot repeats, but don't import the same file twice. If the statement covers dates the bank feed already pulled in, skip the overlap before you reconcile.

Can I convert several bank statements to OFX at once?

Not yet. Today you upload one statement at a time and download one OFX file for it. Batch upload is coming soon, for catch-up clients who arrive with a year of PDFs.

Does Ledgerpour send the OFX file to Xero, Sage or MYOB for me?

No. You only need the PDF statement. Ledgerpour doesn't sign in to any bank or accounting software. You download the OFX file and import it into the client's books yourself, into the account you choose.
